How do I become a Mentor?

For In prison Mentoring:

  1. You can assist other mentors in prison and make up to 4 random visits per year without formal training after passing a routine TDCJ back round check. Contact a mentor coordinator or chaplain at the desired prison unit. See Menu for Mentors and Mentor Coordinators or email CRJMA at mail@crjma.org.
  2. For mentoring in prison on a regular basis you will have to take the required TDCJ volunteer training. A Volunteer Services Application (CRJMA, TDCJ, mentor cordinators and chaplains have these forms) must be filled out and submitted to VS, TDCJ. They will contact you after a backround check and advise you when and where to take the 3 hour training session.
  3. After completing the training you will be placed on the TDCJ computer system as an approved volunteer and may mentor in any prison unit in Texas. A mentor will be allowed only in units after approval of the chaplain and you will be under his/hers direct supervision.

For Aftercare Mentoring:

  1. You will need to contact an aftercare ministry that you would like to work with.
  2. Partial list of aftercare facilities in Texas. http://www.rjmn.net/residential%20aftercare.html
  3. You will work closely with the aftercare facility and follow their guidelines and procedures.
  4. Ex offenders need your help. They may need transportation assistance from the aftercare facility to various activities such as attending church, looking for a job or obtaining personal items. Ex-offenders need role models that they can trust and depend on.
